President Trump identified counterterrorism, support for Israel and containing Iran’s ambitions as his priorities in the Middle East. How do these priorities compare with those of former presidents?

In this course, we will take a historical view of vital US interests in the Middle East and consider whether our current interests there are even compatible with one another.

In sequence, the classes will address the birth of the state of Israel, oil and investment, the promotion of democracy, counterterrorism, nonproliferation—and Israel’s future.

Among the liveliest discussions on the agenda: How can American policies be reformulated to advance our interests and values more successfully?
