THE ART OF JEWISH PRAYER: REACHING FOR THE DIVINE AMIDST THE CHANGING LIGHT
Three times a day—at dawn, midday and evening—Jews have an obligation and an opportunity to deeply enter a moment in time and connect inward, outward and upward. The language of Jewish prayer recognizes changing light throughout the day and the concurrent shifting moods of the soul. In this course, we will closely examine the imagery of Jewish prayer and through that imagery, enter into the deep human truths that underlie the poetics of the liturgy. We will also explore the musical dimensions of Jewish prayer through radically diverse liturgical traditions from around the world. Each artist will have an opportunity to respond to the poetry of Jewish liturgy by creating prayerful art and sharing his or her creations with the class.
