Explore the “Jerusalem of America”: New York. This class will examine the extraordinary Jewish contributions to the city’s popular culture and the equally impressive communal infrastructure Jews built in our “promised city.” Throughout, we will look at the convergence of age-old Jewish traditions and modern urbanism in forming the culture of the New York Jew. We’ll also take one special outing, a tour of Jewish interest in NYC city designed in consultation with the class by the instructor, who regularly guides such excursions.
