“Why be Jewish Anyway?” is one of the ultimate questions raised during the High Holy Days. Is the reason a particularistic loyalty to Israel, the Jewish people and Jewish continuity—especially after the Holocaust? Or is it a universalist Jewish commitment to our planet and humanity at large? Or is it both?
Award-winning author Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman, PhD, has now edited a book on that very subject—Volume 5 in a series entitled Prayers of Awe, a guided tour through the High Holy Day prayerbook that we all need if we are to appreciate the liturgy for the occasion (All the World: Universalism, Particularism and the High Holy Days, Jewish Lights / September 2014).
The series highlights prayers that prove troublesome to modern worshipers or that normally get lost in what is otherwise just pages and pages of undifferentiated verbiage. It is what all of us need to convert the marathon of High Holy Days worship into the memorable and meaningful experience we desire.
Book signing to follow.
