In a city with over 25,000 restaurants, many of which fail within a single year, Danny Meyer’s story is a remarkable testament to the power of hospitality.
What began as one groundbreaking restaurant—Union Square Cafe, opened in 1985—has over three decades evolved to become Union Square Hospitality Group, one of the most renowned and influential hospitality organizations in the world, encompassing fine-dining institutions like Gramercy Tavern and The Modern, casual favorites like Blue Smoke and Marta, an events company, an investment fund and New York’s beloved Shake Shack, which became a public company in 2015.
Danny, his restaurants and chefs have earned an unprecedented 28 James Beard Awards; in addition, Meyer was named to the TIME 100 List of the Most Influential People in 2015 and received the Julia Child Award in 2017.

He’s interviewed countless luminaries on stage at venues throughout New York, including Dan Rather here at The Streicker Center at Temple Emanu-El. For his NY1 series “One on 1 with Budd Mishkin,” he profiled some 400 prominent New Yorkers, including Mr. Meyer.
