The nature of Jewish identity is complex. Are we primarily a community of faith, defined by a relationship to Torah and mitzvot (commandments), or are we primarily a people with a shared origin, language and land?
Two strands of Jewish identity are woven together, yet never entirely form a single cloth. In modern times, as identity increasingly becomes an issue of choice and self-definition, new questions have emerged about who is a Jew. This Sunday Seminar spans from the past to the future, exploring the meaning of Jewish identity yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Rabbi Leon A. Morris was the founding director of the Temple Emanu-El Skirball Center. A leading educator in the field of adult Jewish study, Rabbi Morris is on the faculty of the Shalom Hartman Institute and Hebrew Union College, and is a contributor to Jewish Theology in Our Time and other publications.
Includes a late lunch.
